Huskies Defeat St. Norbert 67-28 in Preseason Exhibition Game

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's basketball team powered past St. Norbert College 67-28 in an exhibition game Saturday night at the SDC Gym. The Huskies were also able to help raise $456 and over four barrels of food for the Husky Food Access Network (Husky FAN).

"I thought our players came out really focused with great energy and they were able to sustain that throughout the game," Michigan Tech Head Coach Sam Hoyt said. "We had some scoring droughts, but I feel like defensively we did a pretty good job of being disciplined. Overall, it was a good start to our season."

Michigan Tech established a foothold with a 13-0 scoring burst to begin the opening quarter. The Huskies worked the ball inside to senior forward Elizabeth Kelliher for a bucket at the 9:50 mark and then redshirt junior Abbie Botz knocked down a jumper and a triple to extend the Huskies lead to 7-0 with 7:26 to play in the first.

Sophomore Cassidy Trotter dialed in a jumper and then knifed through the lane for back to back layups that capped the opening run with 3:30 on the first quarter clock. Freshman forward Jordan Ludescher sank a free throw with just over a minute to go until the quarter break to make it a 14-2 score.

Botz and Trotter added the first four points of the second quarter as Tech continued to expand the advantage out 18-2. Junior guard Baillie McGirk created a 32-5 gap with 2:31 remaining in the first half and the Huskies eventually carried a 34-8 advantage into the halftime break. Trotter then bumped the Huskies lead to 39-8 on a three-point basket with just over eight minutes left in the third and Tech would enjoy a gap of 30 or more points the rest of the way.

Trotter and junior Hannah Hobson powered the Huskies' offense with 15 points apiece followed by Botz who recorded nine points and a game high eight rebounds. McGirk chipped in eight points and shared the team lead in assists with three Saturday night. Trotter had a solid night defensively with five steals against St. Norbert.

As a team, the Huskies connected on 28 of 65 shots from the field (43.1%), were 8 for 30 from behind the arc (26.7%), and 3 of 6 at the free throw line (50.0%). Tech had a 35-33 edge in total rebounds and the defense forced 29 turnovers, with 11 of them due to Huskies' steals.

Macie Zurfluh fired in a team high nine points for St. Norbert while Ali Hoeft and Jessica Boerner chipped in four points apiece. Sarah Neumann had a team high nine rebounds for the Green Knights. St. Norbert made 6 of 37 field goal attempts (16.2%), were 0 for 2 from three-point range, and 16 of 24 at the free throw line (66.7%).

The Huskies will be back on the court Thursday night in an exhibition game at NCAA Division I Eastern Michigan University. The tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
