Huskies On the Road at Saginaw Valley and Northwood this Weekend

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team will be on the road for the first time since September 17th when the team travels to Saginaw Valley State and Northwood University this weekend for a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches this weekend. The Huskies wrapped up a four game home stand at Sherman Field on Sunday with a 0-0 double overtime tie against Ohio Dominican University. Tech went 2-1-1 during the four game stretch and are 3-2-1 at home so far in 2016.

Seniors Jaci Mielke and Jessica Splittgerber power the Huskies' offense going into the weekend with three goals apiece. Mielke also paces the team with three assists and owns a team high nine points through the first nine games of the year. Junior Kirsen Hudak has played every minute in net and has recorded 47 saves. Hudak is fourth in the GLIAC in goals against average (0.65), tied for third in the conference in shutouts (4), third in wins (6), third in save percentage (.887), and fourth in saves. As a team, the Michigan Tech defense ranks second in the GLIAC in fewest goals allowed and third in goals against average.

Saginaw Valley State is 8-2-1 overall and has won two straight contests coming into Friday's match with the Huskies. The Cardinals topped Lake Erie 2-0 and Walsh 3-1 at home last weekend. Saginaw Valley is tied for third in the GLIAC standings with Michigan Tech at 2-1-1 and 7-0 at home. The Cardinals are averaging just over two goals per game while giving up just 0.62 goals to opponents in 2016.

Ashley Henderson leads the offensive attack with nine goals, 18 points, and has four game winning kicks to her credit. Claire Spleth has played the majority of minutes in the goal and is 8-2-1 with five shutouts in 2016. She has surrendered only seven goals and has made 30 saves through 11 contests.

Northwood is 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the GLIAC as they battle for position in the conference standings heading down the stretch. The Timberwolves are coming off a 3-0 win over Lake Erie this past Sunday, but lost to Walsh 2-0 to split their GLIAC games last weekend. Northwood is averaging 1.78 goals per game and is surrendering 1.43 goals per game to opponents so far in 2016.

The Timberwolves are led on offense by Allison Carroll who possesses a team high four goals, three assists, and 11 points in 2016. Samantha Cook is 5-4 with three shutouts in front of the net for Northwood. She has 37 saves compared to 13 goals allowed in 804:43 spent in goal.
