Women's Tennis Starts 2012 with Three Wins

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — The Michigan Tech women's tennis team will return home undefeated after three matches in its opening weekend at Lake Superior State. The Huskies defeated Aquinas and Roberts Wesleyan by 8-1 scores in neutral site matches and topped host LSSU 5-4 in a non-conference match.

Tech opened its 2012 schedule yesterday with the 8-1 win over Aquinas. The Black and Gold swept the six singles flights all in straight sets. Aquinas scored its lone point at No. 3 doubles by an 8-6 score.

Soon after the Huskies concluded their opening match, they were back on the court against host Lake Superior State. The Lakers won two of the three doubles matches to claim an early 2-1 lead. In singles, Tech won at Nos. 1, 2 and 4 while LSSU claimed points at Nos. 3 and 5. The team score came down to No. 6 singles, where Tech's Dunja Imran Al-Sous overcame a 2-0 deficit in the first set to win 6-4, 6-2.

Michigan Tech wrapped up its opening weekend with the 8-1 triumph over Roberts Wesleyan today. The Huskies cruised to wins at every flight except No. 3 singles, where Kira Eck was edged 1-6, 6-3, 11-9 in a third set super tiebreaker.

"It was a good way to start our season," said head coach Kevin Kalinec. "I was happy how we responded in the Lake Superior State match to being down 2-1. We played well in singles and pulled out the win.

"We'll look forward to being at home next weekend."

Tech will play its first GLIAC matches of the season Sept. 8, 9 and 10 when it hosts Lake Erie, Walsh and Malone, respectively.
