Saginaw Valley State Slips Past Huskies 5-4

Saginaw Valley State Slips Past Huskies 5-4

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's tennis team lost a hard fought 5-4 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match to Saginaw Valley State in the home opener Saturday morning. The Huskies and Cardinals split the singles portion of the match 3-3, but SVSU held off Tech in doubles competition 2-1, providing the deciding point.

"We played a pretty solid match today and gave great effort," Michigan Tech Head Coach Kevin Kalinec said. "The doubles portion of the match was very competitive and about as good of play as you'll see from both sides. Saginaw Valley State was just a little more consistent today. In singles, Ivona Gorgioski had a great rally to come back and win in the No. 1 spot. That gave us some energy and a boost of momentum for the rest of the match, but unfortunately we came up just a bit short."

Saginaw Valley State (3-1, 3-0 GLIAC) grabbed the early lead in the match taking the first doubles point in the No. 2 spot in the lineup. Danielle Slonac and Madeline Miller were able to hold of Paola Quintana and Sandra Cvetanovic 8-6 with the Huskies duo hanging with them until the end.

Michigan Tech (3-3, 1-3 GLIAC) battled back in number one doubles with Ivona Gorgioski and Vicky Quinde edging out Shea Donahue and Taylor McLaughlin 9-8 for the point to tie it 1-1. The Cardinals then bounced back to earn the final doubles point when Joanne Gao and Maya Campbell topped Allenca Rolim and Anabella Neri 9-8 to go ahead 2-1.

Saginaw Valley State built their lead to 4-1 in the early moments of singles competition.  McLaughlin and Miller picked up points for the Cardinals before Cvetanovic pulled past Gao 7-5, 6-3. Gorgioski battled back from a 7-6 loss in the first set against Donahue to win the next two 7-5 and 6-2 to stay undefeated in match singles play this season.

Anabella Neri picked up the fourth point for the Huskies with a 7-5, 6-2 victory in the No. 5 spot over Slonac. However, Campbell and Miller notched wins for the Cardinals to create a split in the singles points.

The Huskies will be back on the court Sunday morning when they host Northwood University at the Gates Tennis Center starting at 10 a.m.
