HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's tennis team won for the second straight time, defeating Davenport 9-0 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match Saturday morning at Gates Tennis Center. The Huskies came into the weekend off a huge 5-4 win at Ferris State this past Saturday.
"We played well in all aspects of the game today," Michigan Tech Head Coach Kevin Kalinec said. "Credit to Davenport, they are a good team but were just shorthanded today. We'll be looking forward to competing against them in the future."
The Huskies started out the day with a 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles portion of the match. Ivona Gorgioski teamed up with Vicky Quinde to top Steph Ritson and Adeline Nelson 8-6 in No. 1 doubles while Natalia Parra Alvarez and Sandra Cvetanovic pulled away from Bridget Barrett and Sophie Gossett for an 8-2 decision. The Huskies picked up point number three on a win by default.
Michigan Tech (5-5, 3-5 GLIAC) got another singles win from freshman Ivona Gorgioski who goes to 9-1 on the season and 7-1 in conference singles contests after defeating Steph Ritson 6-1, 6-4 Saturday morning. Senior Sandra Cvetanovic earned her sixth overall win this season with a convincing 6-0, 6-3 victory in No.3 singles against Barrett.
Cvetanovic had played in the No. 2 spot in the lineup the last three matches, but with Paola Quintana back in the lineup she returned to the No. 3. Quintana picked up where she left off before being sidelined with an injury, defeating Adeline Nelson 6-0, 6-3. Vicky Quinde defeated Sophie Gossett 6-0, 6-3 while Anabella Neri and Natalia Parra Alvarez secured points in default victories.
The Huskies will be back at Gates Tennis Center Sunday morning in a GLIAC match against Purdue Northwest on Senior Day starting at 10:00 AM. Tech wraps up the regular season fall schedule next Saturday at Lake Superior State.
