Volleyball Splits Day Two, Closes with Win Over Winona

WINONA, Minn. — The Michigan Tech volleyball team split its two matches at the Winona State Tournament today. The Huskies lost to St. Joseph's 3-0 in their morning match but finished off the weekend on a positive note by beating tournament host Winona State 3-1 this afternoon.

Tech finished its opening weekend at 1-3, and will play four more non-conference matches next weekend.

A slow start plagued the Huskies in the morning match for the second straight day. Tech found itself down 8-2 in the first set and wound up losing it 25-17. In set two, the Black and Gold rolled off four straight points to knot the score at 16 before the Pumas edged out front for the 25-21 victory. St. Joseph's finished off the Huskies in set three despite eight kills from Tech's Audrey Ficek in the frame. The final set score was 25-19.

Ficek finished with a match-high 14 kills and added five digs and a pair of block assists. Sylvie Rokosh was the next-highest in kills with six.

After a short break, the Huskies took the court for the final time on the weekend and handed Winona State its first loss of the season. Tech dropped the opening set 25-16 but bounced back to win the next three.

Kills from Rokosh and Shelby Jones and a service ace from Rachel Pohlod iced set two in favor of the visitors, 27-25. Set three went to the Huskies by a 25-19 score. Tech had a 24-20 lead in set four and finally closed out the win on its fourth match point 25-23.

Three Huskies were in double figures in kills led by Rokosh's 16. Jones and Kienna Sharp added 13 and 10, respectively. Madeline Haben turned in 43 assists. Jacqueline Aird and Pohlod posted 19 digs apiece.

"This was a huge win for us," said head coach Matt Jennings. "We beat a good team on their floor. We were aggressive and were really able to get into rhythm after that first set. It was a total team effort."

Michigan Tech will play in the Superior Oasis Wildcat Open in Marquette, Mich., next weekend. The Huskies' next match will come against Quincy Friday (Sept. 13) at 11 a.m.
