Men's Cross Country Wins Ninth Straight UP Championship
MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Michigan Tech men’s cross country
team won the Upper Peninsula Championships for the ninth time in a
row and the women’s team finished second Friday (Oct.
12).
The Huskies dominated the race posting a perfect team score of 15
over Gogebic Community College who finished with a score of 50.
Matt Dugan won the men’s eight-kilometer race in a time of
26:57. Alec Bolthouse finished second (27:43), followed by Derek
Brandt (27:58), Steven Wenzel (28:10), Michael Batkowiak (28:13)
and Shawn Shove (28:16).
Amanda Halonen was the top finisher for the women’s team
crossing the line in a time of 14:55 over the four-kilometer
course. Three other Huskies finished in the top-20. Megan Smaby was
12th (15:35), followed by Amber Peabody in 17th (15:49) and Lynn
Duijndam 19th (16:08).
Nichole Wehner completed the scoring for Tech finishing 23rd
(16:18). Other finishes included Cassandra Bobart 29th (16:44) and
Noelle Savage 32nd (16:58).
“Amanda and Megan each ran a personal best today,”
said head coach Joe Haggenmiller. “Our women’s squad is
in good shape right now, and it is exciting as we move
forward.”
Mandy Dye won the women’s race in 14:45 to lead Northern
Michigan to the team title with a score of 15. Tech finished second
with 48 points and Finlandia was third with 86.
Tech will compete Oct. 20th at the GLIAC Championships hosted by
Northwood Oct. 20.
