What Is Counseling & How Can It Help Me?
Students attend counseling for a variety of reasons. Counselors are trained to help you identify and change ways of thinking and/or behaving that might contribute to your distress or impair your functioning. Your counselor will help you develop problem-solving, decision making and coping skills to help you adapt to or resolve life’s challenges. Counseling is also a place for you to discuss your personal concerns in a confidential and nonjudgmental setting.
Is Counseling Confidential?
Without a signed release of information by you the student-athlete, information shared in counseling is confidential. Confidentiality means that your contact with this office does not go on your academic record and that clinical materials will not be disclosed to any other office or individual unless you have signed a written release for this to occur. Professional Counselors are exempt from Title IX and they do not report crimes that include sexual violence (including rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment) to university officials. Some exceptions of confidentiality do exist, and include potential harm to yourself or others, possible child or elder abuse, or a court order.

What is the cost for services?
All services provided through Counseling Services and Student-Athlete Wellness are free of cost and do not bill your insurance. A cost would only be incurred for additional services provided outside of the university setting (i.e. prescriptions, health screenings, follow up with medical professional).
Concerned About Someone?
Whether you are a faculty or staff member, parent, friend or roommate you have the ability to report your concern of a Michigan Tech student to the Dean of Students. To ensure that the needs of the student are met and the appropriate office or offices are involved, the Dean of Students Office has created a tool to report your concern based on the type of concern you may have. Please utilize the Report a Concern tool here.
If you have concerns about the physical well-being of a student contact Public Safety who will conduct a health and well-being check. This check is conducted to ensure that the student is safe and provided the resources necessary to make sure that safety is continued. If it is an emergency involving physical harm or a threat to life, call Public Safety or dial 911 (if you are out of the area dial 866-411-0018 to reach Negaunee Central Dispatch). In cases of psychological emergencies, contact Counseling Services during business hours or Public Safety during after hours.

In any emergency involving physical harm or a threat to life, dial 911 or contact Public Safety at 906-487-2216 (if you are out of the area dial 866-411-0018 to reach Negaunee Central Dispatch). If you are in a residence building on campus you can contact your RA or RLC for assistance.

If it is after office hours contact Public Safety at 906-487-2216 and they will contact the counselor on-call.

January 27 - Nutrition
Learn general information and strategies for fueling your body for its unique needs as a Student-Athlete. Meghan Jaszczak is a Clinical Dietician at UP Health System (Portage) and will be on hand to answer your questions and connect you to resources in the area! We will also provide meal-prep tricks and recipes for meals on-the-go!
February 3 - Physical Health & Fitness
Taking care of your physical wellness is a must. We will discuss strategies for maintaining this wellness throughout the semester and where to go if you feel your physical health is starting to slide. Also learn the basics to consider when constructing your own workout plans, whether for breaks, off-seasons, or after you finish your athletic career!
February 10 - Goal Setting
Goal Setting is a necessary component of competing at an elite level in all areas of your life. However, many people don’t realize the considerations that should be taken into account when setting goals. Come learn the “Do’s and Don’ts” of goal setting and how to use this strategy to improve your capacity for success.
February 17 - Putting the “Men” in Mental Health
We will discuss mental health in a way that is designed to empower and strengthen, rather than weaken and shame. Stigma and stereotypes surrounding mental health in sports will be a main focus, with our male student-athletes in mind. Eric Arundel, Clinical Counselor from Counseling Services, will be on hand for this discussion. All student-athletes are welcome to attend, regardless of identified gender!
February 24 - Career
Tune-up your resume, practice your interview skills and get your questions answered about applying and interviewing for internships and jobs. A member of Career Services will be on hand to address your concerns and connect you to additional resources and information.
March 2- Relationships
Relationships are a part of every facet of our lives. Learn how to improve communication and better your relationship whether it be with friends, teammates, coaches, families, or significant others. Also gain insight into what pieces contribute to building and maintaining a healthy relationship and how to identify if a relationship may be unhealthy.
March 16 - Mental Health Check-In
Join us for mental health screenings and check-in conversations as well as learning to “Seize the Awkward” and have a conversation with teammates or friends who appear to be struggling.
March 23 - Emotion Regulation
Emotions are normal and expected, and should be embraced as a part of who we are. We will discuss the benefits our emotions serve and how to use them to our advantage. Also come learn strategies for identifying your emotions and putting them momentarily on “pause” when you need to.
March 30 - Mindfulness
Learn about mindfulness and how to use it to better your entire routine from academics, personal wellness, and even sport performance!
April 6 - Identity Building
As an athlete, you are more than your sport. However, for a large chunk of your life that is likely how you have been identified by yourself and those around you. Use this time to explore your additional identities outside of athletics and have a conversation with others about how your identity plays a role in the life you live and your overall level of well-being.
April 13 - Finances
Finances can cause a lot of stress. Figure out tips and tricks for managing money, budgeting, and being a more conscious spender.
April 20 - Study Skills
Fine-tune your study skills and manage that pre-finals week stress! Get reminded of other crucial parts of your daily routine that can help to optimize study time and prime your brain to perform when it counts.
April 27 - Finals Week Relaxation Session
Take an hour to decompress from the stress of finals week! Hang out, color, play cards, and other games and give your mind the break it needs in order to be successful the rest of the week!
