For the first time in Michigan Tech cross country history, both the men's and women's teams qualified for the NCAA National Championships after second-place finishes at the Midwest Regional. Braden Reichl (6th), Clayton Sayen (13th), and Matthew Pahl (15th) finished in the top 15 for the men. Nate Carey (32nd) and Bobby Beggs (50th) also scored for Tech. Emily Byrd finished fourth for the women. Gabrielle Feber (30th), Carly Huggins (33rd), Sam Kurkowski (39th), and Amanda Kautzer (40th) also scored for the Huskies. The 2019 NCAA Division II National Championships are on November 23 at Haggin Oaks Golf Course in Sacramento, California.
The Huskies dropped a pair of games to No. 3 Minnesota State at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The Mavericks won 3-0 Friday and 2-1 Saturday. Seamus Donohue scored for the Huskies. Robbie Beydoun had 22 saves Friday, and Blake Pietila had six saves Friday and 18 Saturday in his first collegiate start. Tech is now 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the WCHA. The Huskies travel to Lake Superior State for a WCHA road series this weekend. The puck drops at 7:07 p.m. both nights.
The No. 20-ranked volleyball team splits its final home weekend. The Huskies fell 3-2 to No. 19 Ferris State Friday and bounced back with a 3-1 win over Northwood on Saturday. Tech is now 20-5 overall and 12-2 in the GLIAC. Olivia Ghormley (36 kills) and MacAulay Petersen (21 kills) led the offense with Ghormley averaging 4 kills per set. Laura De Marchi averaged 10.63 assists per set, totaling 85 on the weekend. Megan Utlak (54 digs), Anna Jonynas (37 digs), and Emilia Widen (6 blocks) led the defense. Jonynas tallied her 1,000th career dig Friday. Tech wraps up the regular season this weekend at Lake Superior State Friday and Saginaw Valley State Saturday.
Tech opened the 2019-20 season with a pair of wins at the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover at McKendree. The Huskies defeated the hosts 75-71 Saturday and took down Lewis 63-54 Sunday. Kyle Monroe averaged 26 points per game in the set, while Dawson Bilski (14), Tommy Lucca (11.5), and Owen White (10.5) also averaged double figures. The Huskies play at Winona State on Saturday.
The Huskies split their weekend at the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover at Lewis. Tech won the season-opener over the Flyers with a 73-63 victory Saturday and then fell 75-71 Sunday to William Jewell. Abbie Botz (14 points per game), Cassidy Trotter (14), Baillie McGirk (11.5) and Sloane Zenner (11.5) led a balanced offensive attack. Tech plays a pair of games in Moorhead, Minnesota this week against St. Cloud State Friday and MSU-Moorhead Saturday.
Tech fell at Wayne State 35-14 in the final GLIAC road game of the year Saturday afternoon. The Huskies and Warriors were deadlocked at 7-7 through one quarter, but Wayne State went up 28-7 at halftime and stopped a late charge by the Huskies in the fourth quarter. William Marano scored both touchdowns for Tech with a 14-yard reception from Steele Fortress in the first quarter and a 5-yard run in the fourth. Braxton Blackwell and Travis Tidwell led the defense with seven tackles each. The Huskies return home Saturday to play Northwood in the 2019 season finale at and Kearly Stadium. The kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The 2019 Tech soccer season wrapped up on Friday with a 2-1 loss at Northern Michigan in the Superior Dome. Jesse Jacobusse scored for the Huskies and Gracie VanLangevelde had six saves. Tech finished its season with a 5-10-1 overall record and 2-7 mark in the GLIAC.
