Tech Celebrates Completion of Phase One of Sherman Field Project

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech Department of Athletics celebrated the completion of Phase One of the Sherman Field Renovation project with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the 2018 football home opener against Hillsdale this past Saturday. Fundraising has already begun for Phase Two and good progress has been made in hopes of beginning the second part of project in April 2019.

Michigan Tech would like to thank Fred Guenther ('75), Todd Hamar ('83), Alex Kowalski ('01), and Clay Willman ('60) for their hard work and corner stone gifts to support the vision of the football stadium project. Guenther, Hamar, Kowalski, and Willman are all Michigan Tech graduates who believe in the program and the university as a whole. Also, a special thanks to Dr. Glenn Mroz and Tom Kearly for their leadership and vision for this renovation project.

Phase One was completed in August and includes new bleacher seating and accessible parking along with concrete for the VIP Pavilion. Phase two includes an expanded press box, coaching boxes, additional bleachers, restrooms and concessions.

The 2018 season also features two football alumni reunions. An All-Class reunion was held this past weekend while the 1988 Alumni Reunion will be Hall of Fame Weekend (Oct. 11-13) and feature a number of great events. Registration and Information links for the 88 reunion can be accessed below.

The Huskies are 2-0 to start this season thanks to a pair of non-conference wins over Truman State in week one and Hillsdale in week two. Tech topped the Chargers 31-30 in overtime Saturday in the home opener at Sherman Field. The Huskies scored a touchdown with just over two minutes to play in regulation, converted on a two-point play to tie it, and then recorded a touchdown in their only possession in the extra frame.

Michigan Tech kicks off the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference portion of the schedule on Saturday when the team hosts Davenport at Sherman Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
