HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech hockey team opened its final nonconference series of the season with a 2-1 overtime loss to Arizona State Friday (Feb. 16) at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
"The guys played hard," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "We limited them to only three shots in the final 27 minutes. I thought Devin gave us a chance tonight, but their goalie was absolutely outstanding."
Jake Lucchini scored the lone Huskies' goal 12:49 into the first period to give the home team the lead. Lucchini dropped a pass back to Gavin Gould after entering the zone and then got a return cross-ice feed as he finished into the open net for his team-leading 12th of the season. Mark Auk added the secondary assist.
Johnny Walker tied it up 2:52 into the second period when he popped in a loose puck after Tech goaltender Devin Kero got caught up in one of his own defensemen. Brett Gruber and David Norris added the assists.
Jacob Wilson scored the game-winner 2:24 into overtime to snap ASU's five-game skid. Brinson Pasichnuk carried the puck into the offensive zone and found Wilson wide-open in the slot.
The Huskies outshot the Sun Devils 40-23 in the game, including a 16-2 advantage in the third period. Joey Daccord—an NHL draft pick of the Ottawa Senators—stood tall between the pipes for ASU with 39 saves. Kero stopped 21 shots for Tech.
Tech was 1-for-3 on the man advantage and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill.
Lucchini extended his point streak to five games with the goal. He has five goals and three assists over the span. Gould is on a four-game point streak with two goals and three assists, while Auk has a goal and two assists over the past two games.
The teams will wrap-up the nonconference series on Saturday (Feb. 17) at 7:07 p.m.
Tech is now 15-14-5 overall on the season, while ASU improves to 8-18-5.
Saturday is Econo Kids Day at Michigan Tech as the women's and men's basketball teams host Lake Superior State in the afternoon before the hockey game. Econo Foods purchased 500 tickets for youth 14 and under to attend all three events.
