Huskies Take Second at NMU Invitational

Huskies Take Second at NMU Invitational

ISHPEMING, Mich. – The Michigan Tech Nordic ski team finished second in the team standings at the NMU Invitational, hosted by Northern Michigan at the Al Quaal Recreational Course. A week after finishing first in the UW-Green Bay Invitational, the Huskies continue their run of big team performances in CCSA races.

"The team had another strong weekend of competition," said head coach Thomas Smith, as his teams finished in the top two in the second CCSA race of the season. "The team felt fresh and more ready, and they're definitely growing stronger individually and as a team, which is our biggest long-term goal this season."

Reid Goble was the top finisher for the men's side, placing in the top five on both days. Goble placed third in Saturday's 20k Classic with a time of 56:56.4, and finished third on Sunday's 10k Skate with a time of 26:12.5. Kristoffer Vollset joined Goble in the top five with a fourth-place finish after crossing the line at 26:05.5 in the 20k and a fifth-place finish with a time of 58:33.0 in the 10k. Patrick Acton also notched two top-10 finishes over the weekend, placing ninth on Saturday (58:40.3) and 10th on Sunday (26:34.3).

In women's action, Amanda Kautzer was the top performer for Michigan Tech. The junior finished second in the 15k Skate with a time of 49:36.8 and fifth in the 5k Classic with a time of 14:34.8. Erin Lipp pulled off a top-10 finish in the Classic with a time of 15:08.1. Oda Hovland placed in the top-15 in both races, taking 12th in the 5k (15:25.0) and 14th in the 15k (54:23.9).

"We're definitely growing as a team," Smith said. "These are huge, very positive signs entering the championship season. The NMU staff put on a very good event, and Jim and Chris Turvo did an excellent job as race officials."

Michigan Tech will next compete on January 16-17 in Minneapolis, Minnesota when they head for the 2019 CCSA Championships. Numerous Huskies placed in the top 10 in last year's conference championships, with Gaspard Cuenot taking home the 20k freestyle.
