Huskies Picked 6th in GLIAC Preseason Poll

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's soccer program is 6th in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Preseason Poll, announced Monday (Aug. 6) by the conference office. The Huskies' soccer program is about to embark on its ninth overall season in 2018.

Tech has an impressive program record of 79-54-12 with one GLIAC regular season championship and two appearances in the NCAA National Tournament. Head Coach Michelle Jacob begins her ninth season, guiding the program from the beginning in 2010.

Defending GLIAC champion Grand Valley State was picked first in the preseason poll with nine first place votes and 81 total points. Ashland University checked in second with 70 points followed by Ferris State, who accumulated 68 points with one first place vote. Saginaw Valley State claimed fourth with 54 points, Davenport is fifth with 42 points, and Michigan Tech is sixth with 38 points.

Northern Michigan and newcomer to the GLIAC Wisconsin-Parkside tied for seventh with 34 points. Northwood and Purdue Northwest rounded out the poll at No. 9 and No. 10 respectively with 20 and nine points.

A key returner on offense is Brooke Schauer who is entering her sophomore season in 2018. Schauer, who hails from Pulaski, Wisconsin, tied for the team lead in goals (2) and was tied for second on the team in total points (5) this past season as a freshman. Schauer gained valuable playing experience in 2017 and will look to build on that this coming year.

On the back line, Rachel Wall helped anchor one of the top defenses in the conference in 2017. The Huskies ranked fourth in the GLIAC for goals against average at 1.31 and had 13 matches decided by one goal. Wall played a major role in keeping opposing attackers away from the net and out of the box. Wall started all 17 matches a year ago and now has 40 career starts for Tech going into her senior year in 2018. Wall was an All-GLIAC Honorable Mention selection following the 2017 campaign.

The Huskies will face some familiar foes in both non-conference and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchups throughout the course of the year. A new opponent on the GLIAC schedule this season is the University of Wisconsin-Parkside who moves to the GLIAC from the Great Lakes Valley Conference for the 2018 campaign. Tech will take on the Rangers twice this season, including one battle at Sherman Field.

The Huskies kickoff the season in Houghton (Aug. 30) against Minnesota Duluth followed by another non-conference home match versus St. Cloud State (Sept. 1). Tech then goes on the road for four matches at Bemidji State (Sept. 7), Winona State (Sept. 9), UW-Parkside (Sept. 14), and Purdue Northwest (Sept. 16).

The Huskies return home to officially start GLIAC play beginning with Ferris State (Sept. 21). Northwood then comes to town (Sept. 23) before Tech hits the road again for three straight beginning at rival Northern Michigan (Sept. 30). The Huskies wrap up the road trip with showdowns at Grand Valley State (Oct. 5) and Davenport (Oct. 7).

Three of the final five regular season games are at home against Purdue Northwest (Oct. 12), UW-Parkside (Oct. 14), and the 2018 season finale against Northern Michigan (Oct. 26) at Sherman Field. The Huskies play at Saginaw Valley State (Oct. 19) and Ashland (Oct. 21) during the final stretch of the season.
