Tech Volleyball Picked Second in GLIAC North Division

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech volleyball team has been picked second in the North Division in the GLIAC Preseason Coaches Poll. The Huskies look to build on a successful 2017 campaign that included a trip to the GLIAC Tournament Championship match and the NCAA Midwest Regional for the first time since 2009. Head coach Matt Jennings returns for his seventh season after hitting 20 wins last year for the first time in his tenure and the first time for the program since 1997.

In the 2018 Preseason GLIAC Coaches' Poll, the Huskies were picked second in the North Division with 49 points, including one first-place vote. Ferris State (61) was the top pick after its fourth straight GLIAC Championship last year. Northern Michigan (43), Northwood (26), Saginaw Valley State (26), and Lake Superior State (11) round out the North. Wayne State (57) and Grand Valley State (52) were selected to lead the South Division followed by Ashland (40), Davenport (30), UW-Parkside (26), and Purdue Northwest (11).

The Huskies will be led by a trio of All-GLIAC performers. Sophomore setter Laura DeMarchi was the GLIAC Freshman and GLIAC Setter of the Year a season ago after leading the league in assists per set and service aces per set. Senior outside hitter Mariah Sherman joined DeMarchi on the All-GLIAC First Team after hitting .354 in GLIAC matches to rank fourth. Her 193 kills were fifth in league play. Junior MacAulay Petersen was a Second Team selection, finishing second in the GLIAC in kills (215) during league matches. Sophomores Megan Utlak and Anna Jonynas will bring experience to the back row defense while sophomore Olivia Ghormley and junior Rachel Ping will bring depth to the outside and the middle. Four freshmen will replace the four seniors that graduated last year.

Tech has a pair of tournaments before opening GLIAC play. The Huskies travel to Alaska Anchorage to participate in the UAA Invitational before heading to Northern Michigan for the Wildcat Open. Seven home matches are part of the 16-match GLIAC schedule with the Midwest Regional Crossover Tournament during the second weekend of October in Indianapolis. The first home contests are September 14 and 16 with Northwood and Ferris State coming to the SDC Gym.

Volleyball season ticket packages are $70 and include a reserved seat at all seven home matches. At $10 per date, fans receive a $2 discount off a regularly priced ticket. Get yours by calling the SDC Central Ticket Office at 906-487-2073 or visiting
